Is Bedtime Media Use Bad for Sleep? Here’s the Latest Research


A new study published in the Journal of Sleep Research explored how relaxation can be affected by media use such as watching movies, TV, or YouTube recordings; online reading; or paying attention to music — before bed.

In the review, 58 adults maintained a journal that recorded information related to the enjoyment of the media before bedtime, workspace, and various activities. 

Electroencephalography - a test that separates the brain's electrical activity using small metal plates attached to the borders held to the scalp, for example, sleep time, total rest time, and best quality.


The use of the media at rest in the previous hour was related to the previous bedtime. If use before bedtime did not involve excessive activity and directed to bed, there was a lot of rest time. 

Long-term use of the media related to the latest sleep time and the minimum total rest time. Relax quality was not affected by media use before bedtime.


"If you think you're going to use the media, like sitting in front of the TV or listening to music, before going to bed, keep a short, cohesive meeting and you probably won't experience any negative effects on your rest that night," he said. lead creator Morgan Ellithorpe, Ph.D., of the University of Delaware.
